125 animals were killed on a crocodile farm in northern Thailand. The reason for this decision was fear that reptiles would escape during the ongoing floods in the country and pose a threat to the population.
The owner of the farm, Natthapak Khumkad, has been breeding Siamese crocodiles for 17 years. He decided to kill 125 reptiles because he was afraid that the animals would escape during the ongoing flood and pose a threat to people. The farm is located in Lamphun Province in northern Thailand.
– The rain damaged the walls of the farm and unfortunately we had to kill 125 crocodiles – the breeder told AFP. He added that the Siamese crocodiles were killed by electricity.
Photos published on the Facebook profile show an excavator removing reptile bodies from the farm.
This month, northern Thailand experienced heavy monsoon-related rainfall. They led to floods and landslides. The downpours damaged the crocodile enclosures and the animals were able to escape.
Siamese crocodiles
Siamese crocodiles (Crocodylus siamensis) can reach a length of three meters. It is an endemic species in Southeast Asia and is critically endangered in the wild. In Thailand, these reptiles are bred for their skin. The breeder said he asked authorities to provide the crocodiles with a temporary shelter during the floods, but his request was rejected due to the size of the animals.
