Poland was very high up in the EU right after we joined it. All this, unfortunately, has long since disappeared and this regression is getting deeper and deeper – said former Prime Minister Leszek Miller on TVN24. He assessed that for the European Union to be effective, it “must integrate more deeply” and he himself “would see something like a united states of Europe”.
19 years of presence have passed Poland in the European Union. He was a guest of “Piasecki’s Conversation” on Tuesday Leszek Millerformer prime minister who signed the EU accession treaty, now an MEP.
– I keep hearing that European Union then [19 lat temu – przyp. red.] she was different. Yes, but Poland was also different then. I regret that Poland. I mean not so much economic development, because huge progress has been made here, but the fact that Poland has simply moved back in the sense of a large part of its citizens who do not want to stay in the EU, succumb to populist anti-EU propaganda and do not realize what would happen. if Poland were not in the European Union – he said.
He added that Poland “was very high, right after we entered the European Union, we were an example of a successful transformation of this part of Europe, an example for others.” “All of that, unfortunately, has long since disappeared and the regression is getting deeper and deeper,” he said.
Miller: I would see the Union as the united states of Europe
The former prime minister stated that “a lot has happened in the EU over these 19 years”. – Accepted Lisbon Treatywhich has strengthened the EU institutions a bit, unfortunately not enough in my opinion. Secondly, under the influence of the epidemic, we have a very interesting initiative, i.e. the Reconstruction Fund, which for the first time is an action that mutualises debt and deepens integration. We have now war in Ukraine. These three issues forced, caused the Union to change – he enumerated.
Miller said he would see the EU as “something like a united states of Europe”. – If the Union is to be more effective. There are caveats, but what are the caveats? That the EU does not react on time, that the procedures are too long. But this will not change if the Union does not integrate more deeply, he stressed.
