When I close my eyes, I can see the brave fighters of the uprising against thousands of Nazi soldiers who flowed like a great river into the ghetto to annihilate them, said Israeli President Isaac Herzog during the official celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. He added that most of the fighters did not survive, but “the human spirit has triumphed here, in this land sanctified by the blood of our heroic brothers.”

On Wednesday at noon, the main celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began in front of the Monument to the Warsaw Ghetto Heroes. The president, among others, spoke Israel Isaac Herzog.

“We came here exactly 80 years after the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, a symbol of courage in humanity’s darkest hour,” he said.

– When I close my eyes, I can see the brave fighters of the uprising. Imagine the members of the Jewish Combat Organization and the Jewish Military Union, a few hundred only against the thousands of Nazi soldiers who flooded like a great river into the ghetto to annihilate them, against the trained, monstrous forces of the Nazi enemy, armed from head to toe, breaking down another door, house by house, in a cruel, incomprehensible race for Jews, whose verdict was one: death and extermination, Herzog said.

He added that “in front of them stood a group of young people, determined Polish Jews, full of faith and hope, drawing strength from the virtue of bravery, which is woven like a red thread in the fabric of the Jewish nation.”

As the President of Israel said, “most of the fighters of the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto did not survive, but the human spirit won here, on this land sanctified by the blood of our heroic brothers.”
