On the 83rd anniversary of the Katyn massacre, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tweeted that “now, as 83 years ago, the Moscow totalitarian regime continues to kill and torture.”

“Today, we unite as a fraternal Polish nation and honor the memory of the victims of the Katyn massacre. Eternal memory to them! Just like 83 years ago, the Moscow totalitarian regime continues to kill and torture. Together we fight this evil on the battlefield. And we will surely win!” – stated the head of the Ukrainian state in communiqués published in Ukrainian and English.

22 thousand victims

The Katyn massacre, which resulted in the murder of about 22,000 Polish citizens: officers of the Polish Army, policemen and civilians belonging to the elites of the Second Polish Republic, took place in the spring of 1940. On the orders of the highest authorities of the Soviet Union, headed by Joseph Stalin, the NKVD officers carried out mass murders, including in the Katyn Forest, Kalinin (now Twer) and Kharkiv.
