On April 13, the Memorial Day of the Victims of the Katyn massacre is celebrated. Since the morning, ceremonies commemorating the 85th anniversary of the crime have been underway. – That evil was defeated, we live today in an independent, sovereign, free homeland, but evil that was the source of this crime is still lurking around us – said Prime Minister Donald Tusk during the celebration.
On Sunday in Warsaw there are a central celebration commemorating the 85th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, organized by the Office for War Veterans and Repressed Persons, the Federation of Katyn Families and the Polish Army Museum together with the Katyn Museum.
The celebrations are attended by, among others Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the Senate Marshal Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska. The president will commemorate the anniversary in Krakow, where he will submit a wreath in front of the Katyn cross at Father Adam Studziński.
Tusk: Today we can't be silent
– Whenever we worship the memory of the victims of the Katyn massacre, probably each of us feels that silence is loud, that silence is loud than the densest speech, because there is a lack of words, there is a lack of definition to understand the enormity and senselessness of the crime. We are never able to accept the triumph of evil – said Prime Minister Tusk.
– We are never able to accept the fact that victims, those who serve a good cause, can be powerless. We do not accept, we are not able to talk about it wisely when we see evil overcoming good, when bad people pull out their weapons and shot at the occiput innocent. We don't even know how to call those who died – the victims of Katyn or the heroes of the national legend. But today we can't remain silent – the head of government emphasized.
Tusk warned that “admittedly, that evil was defeated, we live today in an independent, sovereign, free homeland, but evil that was the source of this crime is still lurking around us.” He mentioned a Russian attack in the city of a sum that occurred on Sunday morning. – This evil is still tangible, visible. And just like for centuries, so today it threatens evil. It threatens our neighbors, threatens peace – he said.
“No one who raises his hand to Poland will be able to do it with impunity”
– Today we are making gigantic efforts as a nation, as a Polish state, that no such disaster, this type of crime would repeat, so that Poles would never be powerless victims again – said the prime minister. He added that “no one who raises his hand to Poland will be able to do it with impunity.”
Tusk emphasized that “we must fight a lie, meanness, disinformation, with hostile propaganda, which flows every day, every hour”, that “we have to build the strength of Poland together every day.
– Our memory then has the deepest sense when we draw the right conclusions from it. And the memory of these victims will not only be a source of emotions, but above all the source of our strength. I deeply believe it, as I believe in Poland – said Tusk.
“Katyn is not only a story. It's a painful wound”

A year of heroes
By the decision of the Sejm, the year 2025 is the year of Polish heroes from Katyn, Miednoje, Kharkov and Byków.
On March 5, 1940, the Soviet Political Office of the Central Committee of WKP (b) decided to shoot Polish prisoners of prisoners staying in the camps in Kozielsk, Starobielsk and Ostaszków and Polish prisoners detained by the NKVD in the pre -war eastern provinces of the Commonwealth and also in Kiev.
The consequence of this decision was the Katyn massacre, as a result of which NKVD officers shot about 22,000 Polish citizens, including almost 15,000 officers of the Polish Army and the State Police.
