On 11 September 2001, Janice Brooks had simply arrived at work on the 84th ground of the South Tower of the World Commerce Middle when she heard an almighty bang.
The 61-year-old, from east London, had solely moved to New York weeks earlier – and was reassured by a colleague that the noise was doubtless as a result of building work and there was nothing to fret about.
Ms Brooks returned to her desk and continued working, fully oblivious to the truth that a hijacked American Airways airplane had simply been intentionally flown into the adjoining North Tower by al Qaeda terrorists.
Minutes later, she was strolling down the steps of the 1,362ft South Tower when a second airplane struck the World Commerce Middle – this time smashing into the constructing the place she labored.
“I used to be knocked to the facet, I did not fall down however I used to be jostled to the facet,” says Ms Brooks in a brand new Sky Information podcast marking the twentieth anniversary of the 9/11 assaults.
“Then I heard this almighty screaming sound, a girl screaming the scream of nightmares, it is a scream that I can nonetheless hear in my head… she walked by means of the door and her eyes have been filled with blood.”
As a fireball engulfed a part of the highest of the tower, Ms Brooks and her colleagues made a terrifying descent to the relative security outdoors. “After I reached the world outdoors the constructing I may hear this ‘thwacking sound’,” she says, “I later discovered it was the sound of individuals leaping from the constructing and hitting the bottom.”
Ms Brooks was one among a whole lot of survivors that day, however 61 of her colleagues have been among the many almost 3,000 individuals who misplaced their lives.
