Greek authorities say 90 migrants have been rescued from a stranded sailboat within the Aegean Sea, amid a rise in arrivals in current weeks

ATHENS, Greece — Greek authorities say 90 migrants have been rescued from a stranded sailboat close to the Aegean Sea island of Amorgos, amid a rise in arrivals in current weeks.

The migrants, rescued late Thursday, have been taken to the japanese island of Leros and detained for identification and processing after patrol boats and three civilian vessels have been concerned within the rescue, the coast guard stated Friday.

Greek officers have blamed the rise in arrivals largely on ongoing and increasing conflicts in Africa -– including stress on the primary smuggling routes to Europe -– and likewise on a burgeoning black market business in Turkey that produces low-quality inflatable boats.

The federal government says it has not modified its coverage of intercepting boats at sea, a apply that human rights teams say contains unlawful abstract deportations also referred to as pushbacks.
