After the start of the season, Dawid Kownacki went on loan from Werder Bremen to Fortuna Duesseldorf, his previous club. He ended his scoring drought in a familiar environment and he started to show his better sidebut he recently had a misfortune.
Dawid Kownacki was knocked out in the Fortuna Duesseldorf match. “He cried and had to be changed.”
The 27-year-old was in the starting line-up for Saturday's 2. Bundesliga match against Kaiserslautern. And in the 33rd minute, when his team was losing 0-1, he won a penalty kick. However, it came at a very high cost.
After Tim Rossmann's cross, Kownacki jumped into the air and after a while he was hit in the head by goalkeeper Julian Krahl. The situation looked very dangerous, and the Pole was immediately joined by several teammates who showed that the intervention of the medical staff would be necessary.
In this situation, the referee awarded a penalty kick, later converted by Isak Johannesson. However, at that moment the result was not the Polish footballer's biggest concern. “Everyone knew it on TV and in the stadium: Kownacki was crying and had to be replaced,” wrote “Bild.”
The Fortuna Duesseldorf coach spoke after Dawid Kownacki's drama. “Completely unconscious”
“Kownacki's injury is dramatic,” announced the German daily, which asked Daniel Thioune, Fortuna's coach, for a comment. His words about the Pole are shocking. – We're not just talking about a blow to the head, he also suffered collateral injuries. He was completely unconscious. He doesn't remember what happened next, he revealed.
It wasn't easy for the 50-year-old to talk about it. – (Takes a deep breath – editor) He didn't even know we were awarded a penalty kick. He didn't know I approached him when he left the field. He cried. He didn't notice the foot injury he suffered, he continued.
– Plus something happened to his ribs. If it comes out of the tube on Monday and everything is fine, it will be a miracle. But he probably has a concussion and a cracked rib. And his knee, the way he fell… After losing consciousness, he fell on his knee, he added. The striker has a computed tomography scan scheduled for Monday. Afterwards, it should be clear whether and how long the break awaits him.
“Bild” reminded that health problems are, unfortunately, nothing new for Poles. “Kownacki is truly unlucky and it's not his fault: several knee injuries, a damaged ankle, then several thigh injuries, and in the summer of 2020 he missed almost all preparations due to a serious coronavirus infection. And now it has happened to him again,” we read.
– With this move he kept us in the game… – concluded Thioune bitterly, but “in the end, no one at Fortuna could be happy about it.” Mainly due to the striker's problems, but also the final result – the team from Duesseldorf unexpectedly lost at home 3:4. Despite this, it remained the leader of the 2nd Bundesliga table (20 points).
For Dawid Kownacki it was the eighth match this season. So far he has scored two goals and provided one assist.
