The “Burza” Action Park under the Warsaw Uprising Mound has been recognized as the best public space in Europe (European Prize for Urban Public Space). The award is granted annually by the Center for Contemporary Culture in Barcelona.

“The 'Burza' Action Park has just been announced the Best Public Space in Europe! We would like to thank the Public Space Jurors for this prestigious award! Congratulations to Archigrest and TopoScape – working with you is a pure pleasure!” – the Warsaw Greenery Board, which supervised the modernization of the park, announced on social media.

“A new park in the central part of Warsaw innovatively combines the history of the area by recycling ruins from World War II to create an accessible, pleasant public space that combines memory, relaxation and ecological sensitivity,” we read in the description of the park presented as one of the several finalists selected from all over Europe.

The international jury appreciated the raw material from which the park was created. The space of the park refers to the historical symbolism of this place. It talks about the reconstruction of Warsaw, in the showcases you can see the ruins of the capital. In turn, the Warsaw Uprising Mound became a two-level viewing platform.

“The jury particularly appreciated the project's ability to capture the memory of the place through materials: rubble ravines made of the remains of World War II, which created a new structure of the park,” we read in the justification.

This is not the first time that the Mokotów park has been appreciated. In June we reported that the space had been awarded Polityka's Architectural Award. He also won the Grand Prix in the 10th edition of the Warsaw architectural award and the Landezine International Landscape Award – LILA 2024.

A labyrinth of ruins and a viewing platform

Many places in the modernized “Burza” Action Park refer to events from the past. Those entering from Bartycka Street can see a historical exhibition about the reconstruction of Warsaw. There were also showcases displaying the ruins of the capital, with information boards. A similar procedure on a smaller scale was used along the renovated stairs of the Houry “W” avenue. While visiting the exhibition, you may get the impression of wandering through the labyrinth of the ruins of a destroyed city.

The Warsaw Uprising Mound located in the park also refers to history. At its top there is a two-level viewing platform with a renewed symbol of Fighting Poland mounted on a new pedestal.

There are two routes to the top of the Mound: stairs with places to relax and illuminated railings, and newly built ravines with walls made of rubble concrete. Rubble obtained during construction was used to form them. This is a reference to the history of the Mound, which was built after the war from the ruins of the capital.

As part of the reconstruction, over 450 young park trees and approximately 8.5 thousand forest tree seedlings, as well as numerous shrubs and perennials of native species, were planted in the Kopiec area. Wild nature zones with limited access to humans have also been preserved.

The reconstruction of the park under the Warsaw Uprising Mound cost over PLN 24 million. The design of the changes was prepared by topoScape and Archigrest studios. The construction works were performed by Remondis. The investment was supervised by the Warsaw Greenery Board. The modernization of the “Burza” Action Park under the Warsaw Uprising mound in Mokotów began in October 2021.
