Thirty people are missing and 17 rescued in the central Mediterranean on Sunday. A boat sailing from Libya towards Italy capsized due to bad weather conditions, the Italian coastguard said.

The Italian coastguard said in a statement that merchant ships were used in the rescue operation and air support from the EU border agency arrived Frontex.

Earlier, aid organization Mediterranea Saving Humans tweeted that, according to several sources, a boat headed towards Italian capsized Saturday morning about 110 miles northwest of Benghazi, the second most populous city Libya.

Alarm Phone, another aid organization that receives reports of migrants in distress at sea, tweeted that it had first alerted authorities on Saturday, stressing that the boat, with 47 people on board, needed immediate help.
