More than 20 Poles with an Egyptian crew were involved in a boat accident in the Red Sea on Wednesday morning. According to participants, after engine damage, the boat hit a reef and then began to sink. A ship with Swiss divers arrived to help the injured. Currently, injured Poles are waiting to return to their country, but some of them are applying for temporary documents, because they lost their passports during the sinking of the ship. The boat with the participants of the diving safari and the crew sank on Wednesday morning in the Red Sea, near Mars alam. The participants of the expedition contacted us.

According to one of them, there were 26 divers from Poland and 12 Egyptians on board the ship. The ship was about to hit a reef and begin to sink. – Fortunately, we managed to save everyone. A ship with Swiss divers came to help, our interlocutor said.

According to his account, the diving safari was supposed to last from June 3 to 10. – 26 Poles from various Polish cities plus 12 members of the Egyptian crew. The boat was in a deplorable technical condition. She had problems all the time. We were returning to the port due to damage to the engine and compressors. At 4:30 a.m. the ship hit the reef with all its might and immediately began to sink. After about 15 minutes, another boat arrived and took the Poles on board. Nine people lost everything, including their passports, the Pole reported.

“I heard a bang early in the morning”

Mr. Artur was also in the sinking boat. – The diving trip was supposed to last seven days, but from the beginning we noticed technical problems. There was no air conditioning on the ship, there was a burning smell. We agreed that after three days we would return to the hotel. Early in the morning I heard a bang, the ship stopped. There was already water in the corridor. People boarded the pontoons, which were overloaded. Fortunately, there were no waves and the pontoons held our weight, but it shouldn’t be like this, he said.

According to our interlocutors, one of the people suffered leg injuries. The participants of the expedition were transported to the hotel in Marsa Alam. The Polish Embassy in Cairo was informed about the accident.

– The police took care of it. We gave evidence, and then we were given documents written in Egyptian by the local prosecutor to sign. The statements did not coincide with our testimonies. We explained everything online. The statements said, for example, that we were waiving compensation. Most of the participants of the trip did not sign these documents – said Mrs. Teresa.

Among the participants of the expedition was also Mr. Piotr. – From the very beginning, the embassy helped us. She coordinated cooperation with the police and the court. Those who lost their passports were guaranteed transport to Cairo. They were issued temporary passports there. We are now waiting for them to join the rest of the participants. The tour operator has arranged for us to stay until Saturday in a five-star hotel in Marsa Alam, everything is paid for, he said.
