The Pyramid of Cheops is one of the most famous buildings in the world, so it would seem that there are no more secrets for archaeologists. It turns out, however, that scientists have discovered a several-meter corridor inside it.

Egyptian authorities announced on Thursday the discovery of a hidden nine-meter-high corridor in the Great Pyramid of Giza – the first structure of its kind found on the north side of the famous building.

The discovery was announced by Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass and the country’s tourism minister Ahmed Eissa.

It is not yet known what it was used for

A corridor measuring nine by two meters is located above the main entrance to the pyramid, near its base. It was detected thanks to the international Scan Pyramids project, which has been ongoing since 2015. This project uses, among other things, muon tomography, which allows to obtain images thanks to muons produced in the Earth’s atmosphere by high-energy cosmic rays. The function of the corridor is unknown, but its discovery may herald further archaeological finds.

It is 4.5 thousand years old

The Great Pyramid, located about 18 kilometers from downtown Cairo, is also known as the Pyramid of Cheops because of the 4th Dynasty Pharaoh Cheops (Khufu), who reigned from 2509-2483 BC and commissioned its construction 4,500 years ago. It is 146 meters high and for thousands of years it was the tallest structure built by mankind.

Despite credible theories, the method of construction of the Great Pyramid remains the subject of disputes and fantastic hypotheses, which arouses interest in every new discovery that concerns it.

This ancient building, thanks to its size and stable construction, is the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world preserved to modern times. To this day, it makes a huge impression on visitors to Giza, and many tourists come to Egypt mainly to “see the pyramids”. Tourism is a very important branch of the Egyptian economy, and in recent years this sector has been in crisis. No wonder the Egyptian government is trying to draw the world’s attention to such a unique monument as the Great Pyramid.
