This is supposed to be the first movie made in space. Actress Julia Peresild and director Klim Szypienko are scheduled to fly on October 5 aboard the Soyuz MS-18 to the International Space Station, where they will shoot the film “Challenge”. The mission will last 12 days. If the expedition is successful, the Russians will win this space race with Tom Cruise.
The story with the working title “The Challenge” will focus on the fate of a doctor sent to the International Space Station, where she is to perform an operation on a cosmonaut who is too sick to return to Earth.
Space movie – race
Two names are associated with this project: Julia Peresild, who will play the main character, and Klim Szypienko, who will direct the film.
Peresild is a 37-year-old star who has starred in several Russian blockbusters, incl. “The Battle of Sevastopol” and “At the End of the World”. Equally famous is Szypienko, who made the highest-grossing Russian production – the comedy “Rich boy”. “The Challenge” will be his second film dealing with the subject of space. Earlier, he made a picture about the Soviet space station “Salut 7”.
Both the actress and the director were recognized as fit for space travel by specialists from the Main Medical Commission at the Cosmonaut Training Center. J. Gagarin. They both underwent a special training, which included, among others, skydiving and non-gravity flights.
“The Challenge” is the fruit of cooperation between the state-owned space agency Roskosmos and the public television station Pervy Kanał.
A movie in space – an idea by Tom Cruise
However, it was not these institutions that first announced the idea of making a film in space. Well, in May last year, NASA announced that it has partnered with Tom Mali to create the first-ever film shot partially in space. This production is also to take place at the International Space Station, and Cruise is to be transported there by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. However, it is still unknown when the shooting for this project will begin.
