Sergei Cherkasov, who wanted to spy on the International Criminal Court in The Hague (ICC), was charged by the US judiciary on Friday. A Russian GRU agent was deported from the Netherlands last April and later arrested in Brazil.
The NOS portal reported on Saturday. Last June, the Dutch intelligence service (AIVD) revealed that it had prevented the employment of a Russian military intelligence GRU spy at the International Criminal Court. Sergei Cherkasov, claiming to be Brazilian, was deported shortly after arriving from Brazil.
“He pretended to be a foreigner”
A man claiming to be Viktor Muller Ferreira flew from Sao Paulo to Amsterdam Airport in April 2022. He was arrested on the spot by the Dutch services, Dutch intelligence said in a statement.
“While posing as a foreigner, he was supposed to gain access to information not available to Russians,” he said. Dutch intelligence estimates that the threat posed by the intelligence officer was “very great”.
Points out that a spy at the ICC could be of great value to Russian intelligence services, especially as that court is currently investigating war crimes committed by Russian soldiers in Ukraine.
