A heat wave has come to Poland. Thermometers on the weekend will show as high as 34, 35 degrees Celsius. There are warnings throughout the country. Beautiful weather encourages you to rest by the water. What should you remember to spend this time safely?
A hot weekend has started. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued a third degree heat warning for the Lubuskie Voivodeship. Second and first degree alerts are valid in the rest of the country. According to forecasts, the heat wave will move to the east of the country.
The sun and heat encouraged crowds of people to rest by the lakes and the sea. For those who prefer walking instead of lying on the beach, some cities have launched water curtains – they appeared in in Warsaw, Gorzów Wielkopolski, Kalisz, Częstochowa, Gdańsk and Kraków.
Specialists remind you how to spend this time safely.
– Generally, it must be said that the heat is no joke. Of course, for young and healthy people, summer is a time of relaxation, vacation and activity. The elderly and chronically ill should be especially careful. During hot weather, we advise against going out into the sun – especially in the afternoon hours – said prof. Paweł Ptaszyński from the Central Teaching Hospital of the Medical University of Łódź. He also appealed for giving up sweet carbonated drinks at such a temperature. Such drinks do not quench your thirst and do not keep your body hydrated. – You have to drink water, about a liter more than usual. The norm should be three liters, and even a little over. Additionally, it should be spread evenly throughout the day. Remember that the water should not be ice cold. It is best at a temperature slightly lower than the room temperature. Sometimes, however, even a drink of warm tea is refreshing – pointed out the cardiologist. As for active people, they should go to training in the morning or evening hours. We should also protect ourselves from the heat at home.
Safe on the water
Lifeguard Radosław Wiśniewski from the Masurian Volunteer Rescue Service also reminds about safety on the water.
– The only reasonable place for a bath is where there is a qualified, trained lifeguard who not only can notice that someone is drowning, but also professionally get him out of the water and help him – said Wiśniewski. He emphasized unequivocally that when resting by any water, parents should absolutely be with children up to the age of 7. – Hundreds of times we look for children who are lost to their parents, because mum or dad just looked at the phone or talked to someone – he noted.
It also debunks the myth that parents can quickly find their children by sight. – Nothing could be more wrong. The beaches are full of children in pink or blue bathing suits. They look the same from a distance, there is no need to delude yourself – he added.
The lifeguard also urges us not to jump headlong into the water in unexplored, unknown places.
– Under water, there may be remains of the old deck that cannot be seen, stones, it may be too shallow to make such a jump. A poorly made head jump is very often associated with a spinal cord rupture and a two- or four-limb paralysis – she emphasizes. He also reminded you to prepare your body for a drop in temperature before entering the water on hot days.
– You have to remember about thermal shock. When we sunbathe, we are completely warm, so before we dive into the water, you need to cool down slowly. First, the head, armpits, chest – where there are large blood vessels. It should take a while. Otherwise, due to a sudden change in temperature, we may lose consciousness in the water, faint – he warns, because it can be fatal.
