When one of the most beautiful sailing ships hits one of the biggest attractions of New York, he must focus on the world's attention. Especially that the accident led to the death of two young people and injuries to many others. And no wonder that questions are born – including the most obvious: how could it happen at all. On Saturday evening a sailing ship with 277 people on board left the famous quay 17 in Manhattan, near the Brookliński Bridge. Earlier, for several days he stood moored at the South Street Seaport Museum, where he was made available to visitors. As the New York Times writes, Cuauhtémoc was to head south and leave New York, with a stop for refueling at the Brooklyn quay, and then go towards Iceland.
Instead, around 20:30 he sailed in the second direction, to the BrookliÅ„ski Bridge – where he did not intend and could not swim, because it is about 10 meters higher than the bridge clearance. Curauhtémoc accident. What is known about the victims
“The New York Times”, citing the Mexican jacket, reports that two people were killed in the catastrophe, and at least 22 were injured, of which 11 after the accident were in critical condition, and the nine condition was defined as stable.
One of the fatalities of the tragedy is 20-year-old Amérika Yamilet Sánchez, a student of engineering at the Mexican Naval Academy. According to the Mexican authorities, the young sailing died after the fall from one of the Cuauhtémoc masts. The AP agency writes that earlier on the same day, the girl talked to her mother and excited about the next stages of the cruise.
As the New York Times writes, the second victim is 23-year-old Adal Jair Maldonado Marcos. The information was confirmed by the journal Raúl Rangel González, mayor of San Mateo del Mar, a seaside town in the state of Oaxaca, where he came from.
Other sailors who did not suffer serious injuries were to be taken to the New York airport on Sunday evening, from where they flew to the country. According to CNN, only “a handful of crew members” remained on board.
