Son of MP Magdalena Filiks, MP of the Civic Coalition, Nicholas, died on February 17. The boy was 15 years old, he committed suicide. It is impossible to unequivocally judge the reasons for taking one’s own life, the investigation in this case is being conducted by the Szczecin prosecutor’s office. According to the head of the state commission on pedophiles, Błażej Kmieciak, at the turn of the year, the government media led to the identification of the MP’s son as a victim of a convicted pedophile.

In connection with this case, the editors of OKO.press, “Polityka”, Onet and “Gazeta Wyborcza” initiated a joint journalistic protest. Signatures were collected individually so that each representative of the journalistic community could speak.

The protest said, among other things, that the death of Mikołaj Filiks “has become a challenge for public opinion, especially for our environment, because it could have been caused by the actions of people who present themselves as journalists and journalists.” “Public media – Radio Szczecin and TVP Info – informing on December 29, 2022 about the judgment of December 2021 regarding a person convicted of pedophilia, they did it in a way that allowed for easy identification that the child of the Szczecin MP was the victim” – it was emphasized .

Thanks to the editors

Gathered in protest 912 signatures, of which 42 came from TVN24 journalists. Piotr Pacewicz, editor-in-chief of OKO.press and Łukasz Lipiński, editor-in-chief of Polityka.pl, thanked the superiors of all editorial offices that decided to join the campaign. Their full text is presented below.

Dear Primates, Dear Primates!

Once again, we would like to thank all of you who got involved in the “Journalistic protest after the tragic death of Mikołaj Filiks” campaign. Without your support, it would not be possible to collect so many votes from our environment. We also thank you for all the comments and corrections that you made at the stage of writing the content of the protest , we tried to take into account all voices, although it was not always possible to fully reconcile them.

Thank you also for spreading the word about the protest in your media and for all other ways of getting involved. We saw how new applications poured in after subsequent articles, statements, TV materials, voices in social media.

In our opinion, over 900 signatures are a great success of the joint initiative and a strong voice in defense of the principles of journalism that we must and want to follow. In this sense, the addressees of the protest are also ourselves and ourselves, as well as people with whom we work, and who often simply overlooked our initiative. If anyone in your editorial office regretted not being on the list, write to piotr.pacewicz@oko.press.

We would also like to draw your attention to the proposal of Krzysztof Bobiński and Andrzej Krajewski, supplementing the protest. Moved by the drama of Magda Filiks’ family, they encourage you to introduce the following entry in your media codes of conduct (or similar editorial documents):

“Privacy and intimacy must not be violated. Special protection in this regard should be given to minor victims of sexual crimes, their dignity and privacy must be protected during the investigation, during and after trials. In no case should data be published that would allow the identification of victims such events.”

If you do not have an editorial Code (or should you have one?), then the above principle can be disseminated in another way among the editorial team.

Thank you for the mobilization and until the next opportunity. Unfortunately, we can be sure that there will be reasons for us to speak out as a journalistic community.

Piotr Pacewicz, Lukasz Lipinski
