A cloud resembling a flying saucer hung over the peaks. It was captured on a recording by an employee of the IMWM-PIB High Mountain Meteorological Observatory on Kasprowy Wierch.
On Monday, an extremely spectacular Altocumulus lenticularis cloud, resembling a flying saucer, was seen from Kasprowy Wierch. It was captured on video by Mr. Ćukasz Chmura from the IMWM-PIB High Mountain Meteorological Observatory in Kasprowy.
Lenticular cloud
The cloud visible in the recording is a lenticular cloud – Altocumulus lenticularis. Such clouds most often form over mountains. When air with stable humidity encounters a hill, it undergoes waves. Lenticular clouds form on the crests of such waves.
Altocumulus lenticularis clouds are positioned at right angles to the wind line and parallel to the mountain line. Due to the waves in the air that accompany them, these clouds are avoided by airplane pilots. Turbulence often occurs near lenticular clouds.
