According to a survey conducted for “Fakty” TVN and TVN24, health care and high prices are the most important topics of the election campaign. The prices of vegetables are going crazy, but also, among other things, meat. Holidays can be more modest for many people.
According to poll conducted by Kantar for “Fakty” TVN and TVN24 health care and high prices are the two most important topics of the election campaign before this year’s parliamentary elections.
A year and a half to an angiologist, a year to a hematologist
Poles were asked to answer whether a given topic, in their opinion, is important and whether it should be discussed before the elections. As many as 95 percent of them indicated the situation in health care as important. TVN24 reporter Mateusz Grzymkowski went to the University Clinical Hospital in Bialystok – the largest in north-eastern Poland. There, as it turned out, some specialists take it after a few days of enrolment. However, some are much more difficult to get to.
Raging prices of vegetables, meats and cold cuts
Queues line up in stores for promotions. This is the result of rising food prices. According to the data of the Central Statistical Office published on Wednesday, March 15, in February over the last year, food prices increased the most. We are talking about an increase of 24 percent on average. And this is an important issue for voters, because high prices were indicated by 92 percent of those surveyed by Kantar.
– When it comes to cold cuts and meat, we see increases of about 20-22 percent compared to March last year. This is due to several factors, such as livestock, which has increased in price by over 30 percent year on year. We have more than 300 percent higher gas bills. Fortunately, we secured ourselves with a long-term contract for electricity supply, but we have a three-times higher price offer for next year – emphasizes Michał Sobieraj from the Jager company from Łódź, dealing with the production and sale of meat, in an interview with TVN24 reporter Piotr Borowski.
Sobieraj adds that the increase in prices is also influenced by the more expensive than a year ago fuel needed for vehicles that deliver products to stores. The effects can be seen in the price list – in March last year, a kilogram of pork loin cost less than PLN 22, now it is over PLN 26.5. After a year, we pay less than PLN 27 for a pork neck instead of almost PLN 22, and for a Silesian sausage we will pay almost PLN 29 instead of the previous PLN 23.
A representative of Jager points out that a change in consumer behavior among customers is visible. – We can see a significant increase in the sales of products that are currently on promotion, it is an increase of up to four or five times. There is a demand for the goods, only the customers are limited by the price – he emphasizes.
Experts: vegetable prices will fall, but not before Christmas
Expensive prices on receipts are reflected even for those who do not eat meat. Vegetable prices have also gone up compared to last year. How much? This was checked by TVN24 reporter Aleksander Przybylski, who went to one of the markets in Poznań on Monday and looked at the prices of key products there.
Vegetable prices are very high in March not only because of this inflationbut also the season – the so-called pre-harvest season. However, it is difficult to hide the high prices – the record holder in terms of price increase is onion, for which this year you have to pay up to three times more than in March last year.
Currently, domestic vegetables are 55.7 percent more expensive than a year ago. Along with the spring, vegetables will become cheaper, but rather, according to the analyzes of the largest Polish vegetable market in Bronisze, one should not expect too much drop in prices until Easter.
This means that Christmas tables will be more modest than usual this year. – Last year, peppers cost about PLN 12 in this period, and now PLN 24. It’s devastating – admits one of the inhabitants of Poznań in an interview with a TVN24 reporter. The woman admitted that this year she intends to buy less products for the Easter table than in previous years. – It will be more modest, because there is no denying that it is expensive – admits another buyer at the Poznań market.
Why the persistently high price of peppers? As Aleksander Przybylski emphasized on TVN24, this is the effect of drought in Spainwhich is one of the largest exporters of this vegetable.
How long will the price increases stay with us? Economists have no doubt that we still need to be patient. – I am not surprised that the prices of selected vegetable species increase in the early spring period – said Dr. Michał Gazdecki, a specialist in food markets from the University of Life Sciences in Poznań, in front of the TVN24 camera. He also pointed to a high inflation rate, which overall – according to the Central Statistical Office – exceeded 18 percent in February. – Of course, it won’t be a day or two, but let’s wait a bit, and vegetable prices will definitely start to fall in the near future – the expert calmed down.
