“Only through the play-offs to the Euro, we were the first to go home from the Euro, and in the Nations League we were one floor below – that was the year of the Polish national team. Fortunately, right after the relegation, the coach announced that we were going in the right direction. It's scary where we will end up” – wrote Dawid Szymczak from Sport.pl after losing the match against Scotland. And it's hard to disagree with him, especially since the World Cup qualifiers are ahead of us. It won't be easy at all, because we simply play very poorly. Moreover, there are no prospects for things to get better. Unfortunately. But despite everything, it's not the first time – we are more lucky than smart.

The Polish national team will play the next match in March. With whom? It is unknown. We will find out on Friday, December 13, when the 2026 World Cup qualifying groups are drawn. We already know that we will be drawn from the second basket. Football Meets Data revealed that due to the new drawing rules announced by UEFA, we will definitely play in a five-team group. What's more, we will also miss the LN semi-finalists.

Therefore, from the first basket we will get one team from the group: England, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria or one of the losers of the LN quarterfinals. It will therefore be one of the following: France, Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy, Croatia, Germany and Denmark. “Until September, we will only play against teams from the three weakest baskets,” said a statistics specialist on the “X” AbsurdDB portal. He added that the new rules are a “disaster and fraud”.

“It doesn't matter that they are beneficial to us, they are simply unfair. The teams that have been relegated to Division B have an easier path than those that will play in the relegation play-offs,” he said. The journalist admitted that UEFA's decision increased our chances of qualifying for the World Cup from 23 to 28 percent.

What else did we learn? Apart from us, in groups of five teams we will see: Wales, Sweden, Romania, Norway and the Czech Republic. Scotland, Ukraine and Türkiye will play in groups of four teams. Interestingly, Football Meets Data pointed out that UEFA does not want any of the teams from the first basket to play qualifying matches in March.

This means that they will start the competition in June at the earliest. If that was not enough, the teams that will be placed in groups with four teams will start the competition only in September. England, Switzerland, Belgium and Austria have a small chance (only 25%). The final group standings will be announced in March after the play-offs are decided.
