A robot dog learns to walk on terrain that resembles the surface of Mars

Scientists teach a four-legged robot dog to navigate through mountainous terrain. The exercises take place at Mount Hood in the US state of Oregon. This terrain is intended to simulate the extreme conditions on the Moon and Mars.

The robot dog called Spirit was created as part of the LASSIE (Legged Autonomous Surface Science in Analog Environments) project, which is created by specialists from NASA, Texas A&M University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Oregon State University, Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania.

They teach a robot dog how to navigate mountainous terrain

At the Mount Hood stratovolcano in Oregon, scientists are teaching a four-legged robot to navigate on difficult and variable terrain.

– When we walk on uneven surfaces, after some time we can feel whether the ground under our feet will slide or not. A four-legged robot does exactly the same thing, said Dr. Cristina Wilson of Oregon State University.

The robot's legs have been adapted to walk on several different terrains, especially those that have so far been beyond the reach of wheeled robots. The creators of the LASSIE project believe that Spirit will be able to move successfully even through small and difficult to access caves.

– The robot dog has a very advanced data transfer system. Every step, every paw touch analyzes the surface on which the robot is moving. This data is so important that it will be analyzed by scientists, Wilson said.
