On Wednesday, Catalonia, a region in the north-east of Spain, was hit by a wave of intense rainfall, which in places exceeded 60 l/sq m. The sudden change in weather was caused by the passage of a cold front.
A storm hit Catalonia on Wednesday evening. The passage of the front was associated not only with rainfall, but also with several degrees of cooling.
The Catalan Meteorological Service has issued level two warnings on a six-level scale for regions in the southwest of Catalonia.
Sudden heavy rain
In just a few hours, an average of 20 liters of water per square meter fell across the entire region in northeastern Spain. The most intense rainfall was recorded near Terrassa – 67.9 l/sq m. and Sabadell – 60.9 l/sq m. located in the extreme southern reaches of Catalonia.
The downpours were also accompanied by a sharp drop in temperature. In Barcelona, the thermometers showed 14.2 degrees Celsius, and in Girona even 11.2 degrees Celsius. In the previous days, the air temperature during the day did not drop below 20 degrees Celsius.
According to meteorologists, the cold front has moved away from Catalonia, and sunny weather will dominate in the coming days.
