Two days after the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Normandy landing veteran 100-year-old Harold Terens got married. The ceremony took place at the town hall in Carentan, several dozen kilometers away from the place where the operation began on June 6, 1944. His wife was 96-year-old Jeanne Swerlin. After saying the sacramental “yes”, the newlyweds attended an official dinner at the Elysée Palace. Guests included Joe and Jill Biden, Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, and Salma Hayek and her husband Francois-Henri Pinault.

100-year-old Harold Terens and 96-year-old Jeanne Swerlin got married. The couple got married on Saturday, just two days after the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy on June 6. Terens is one of the veterans of the legendary operation. While delivering his wedding speech, the American wished everyone “peace around the world and the preservation of democracy.” He also stated that because he was able to say the sacrament surrounded by his loved one, Saturday was “the happiest day of his life,” Sky News reports.

The British portal also quotes the words of a 96-year-old bride. Even before getting married, Jeanne Swerlin emphasized that “love is not only for young people.” – We also have butterflies in our stomachs, and sometimes we act a little – she recalled. She also announced with a smile that her boyfriend “is the best kisser in the world.”

The couple got married at the town hall in Carentan – a town only 20 kilometers away from “Utah Beach”, one of several places where the landing of Allied troops began on June 6, 1944. Although the ceremony took place at the municipal office, due to the American citizenship of the bride and groom, it was only symbolic.

After it ended, the spouses went to the Elysée Palace, where they took part in the event organized by the president France gala dinner. Also among the invitees were Joe and Jill Biden, Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Salma Hayek and her husband Francois-Henri Pinault, as well as former tennis player John McEnroe and his singer wife Patty Smyth. The event was honored by a performance by Pharrell Williams.
