Defense Minister Rustem Umerov announced that the Ukrainian army “has crossed two Russian defense lines and is now in front of the third.” We summarize the last week of fighting in Ukraine.

“The operational situation in the east of our country remains difficult. The enemy does not stop conducting offensive operations on the entire front,” Oleksandr Syrski, commander of the Ukrainian land forces, said in a Sunday entry on the Telegram channel. Also on Sunday, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that the most difficult situation remains in the Avdiivka region, as well as in the Bakhmuk and Kupany directions.

The “symbolic” meaning of the fights for Avdiivka

The fighting for Avdiivka, located near Russian-occupied Donetsk, is beginning to have a “symbolic” significance. According to the assessment of the Institute of War Studies (ISW), the Russian army was tasked with capturing two cities – Avdiivka and Kupyansk (in the Kharkiv Oblast) before elections presidential w Russiawhich will take place on March 17 next year.

Putin announced on Friday that he was running in these elections. According to ISW, this means that “his campaign may focus more on Russia’s war in Ukraine than originally expected.”

According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russian forces are undertaking offensive operations on various sectors of the front despite unfavorable weather conditions because they want to take the initiative before the March elections.

On Friday, an American think tank said that Russian troops had occupied the sewage treatment plant, which is located about five kilometers northwest of Avdiivka.

According to Kiev military expert Oleksandr Kovalenko, the areas currently controlled by Russians near the sewage treatment plant do not give them a significant advantage. – The advantage for the Russians are locations that will allow them to minimize or at least stop supplies to the Ukrainian troops fighting for this city. In other words, cutting through logistics, Kovalenko said.

Beginning of the “strike campaign”

The British Ministry of Defense announced that the Russians most likely started… Ukraine “a more coordinated campaign that aims to degrade Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

On the night of December 7-8, the Russians attacked Kiev and the central part of Ukraine using several Tu-95 heavy bombers.

The British news television Sky News assessed the situation similarly, reporting that Russia’s missile attacks on the night from Friday to Saturday may signal the beginning of a campaign of attacks on Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure, for which the Kremlin has been preparing in recent months.

Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuri Ihnat told reporters that the Russians fired 19 Kh-101 and Kh-555 cruise missiles during that time. 14 rockets were shot down.

Third line of defense

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said in an interview with the American television Fox News that the Ukrainian army “has crossed two lines of defense of the Russians and is now in front of the third, last line of defense of the enemy.” Umerov also said that “Ukrainians have a plan for 2024.”

Umerov gave an interview to Fox News during his visit to USA. The Ukrainian section of Radio Svoboda recalled that the visit took place against the backdrop of expectations regarding the promised aid to Kiev. The bill containing $61 billion in aid for Ukraine proposed by the White House did not obtain a sufficient majority in the Senate to proceed further.

“On December 5, it became clear that Republicans in the US Congress are not ready to support aid to Ukraine (as well as Israel and Taiwan) if their proposals to strengthen the southern border of the United States are not taken into account,” Radio Svoboda reported

The media in Kiev also quoted the results of research by the Kiel Institute of the World Economy, which showed that in the period from August to October this year, aid promised to Ukraine by Western countries reached the lowest level since January 2022 – it dropped by almost 90 percent compared to the same period last year. year and amounted to over EUR 2 billion.

“The largest donor of military aid (reaching over $44 billion so far – ed.) is still the United States,” the Ukraińska Pravda website commented on the research results.

An attack on a pro-Russian politician

Ukrainian media also reported the assassination of a well-known pro-Russian politician and former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, Ilya Kyva, who found refuge in Russia after the armed invasion. His body was found in one of the parks in the Moscow region.

The Investigative Committee of Russia has initiated an investigation into this matter. According to the interlocutor of the Ukraińska Pravda portal, Kyva, “a leading traitor, collaborator and pro-Russian propagandist”, was shot by officers of the Security Service of Ukraine.

Russian investigators, in a post on the X platform, showed the place where it happened.
