A woman from Jaworzno who wanted to invest in cryptocurrencies lost 700 thousand złoty, the Silesian police reported on Sunday. Tempted by an online ad and the persuasion of a fake analyst, she installed an application that gave fraudsters access to her bank account.
As reported by Silesian police, a 45-year-old resident of Jaworzno fell victim to a cryptocurrency scam. Encouraged by an advertisement on an online platform, she decided to invest her money in bitcoin mines. According to the instructions, she filled out a contact form and left her details, and then made a transfer. At first, everything seemed to work. Small profits began to appear in her account. The woman was contacted by an alleged company analyst who, via messenger, advised her on the next steps, encouraging her, among other things, to invest larger amounts, promising higher profits. To this end, the man instructed the woman to install a special application, which she did.
Cryptocurrency scam
“Unfortunately, this application allowed the fraudster to independently conduct transactions on her account. Once he obtained the 'remote desktop', he stole all the money from the victim's account and then took out loans using her and her son's data,” the police reported.
In the following days, there were requests to pay additional amounts, threatening to take legal action in Englandif the “tax” is not paid. Seeing the further pressure, the woman realized that she had fallen victim to a crime. Ultimately, the 45-year-old and her son were defrauded of PLN 700,000. “Cryptocurrency is a virtual currency referred to by some as 'digital gold'. More and more people, tempted by the prospect of quick profit, decide to invest in cryptocurrencies on popular online platforms,” the police explained. At the same time, the police appeal to be reasonable when making online transactions, and refer to the website of the National Bank of Poland for information on cryptocurrencies.
