Returning to the so-called abortion compromise would increase women’s sense of security, which was radically lost after the Constitutional Court’s judgment, said PSL chairman Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz on Tuesday in “Fakty po Faktach”. He said that the best solution in this matter is a referendum. “Politicians are incapable of resolving this issue,” he explained.

Warsaw-Praga District Court sentenced Justyna Wydrzyńska for eight months of restriction of freedom – by performing 30 hours of unpaid community service a month. Wydrzynska was acquitted of the second charge – possession and marketing of prohibited substances – misoprostol tablets.

In 2020, the activist provided abortion pills to a woman who asked for help and signaled that she was in an abusive relationship. The woman already had one child, was pregnant with her second child, and her partner prevented her from going abroad to have an abortion.

The head of the PSL was asked about the case in “Fakty po Faktach”. Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.

– In our list of common issues, which we presented together with Szymon Hołowniais the first point, “restoration of the (abortion) compromise”, because there will be a majority for this – said the head of the peasant party.

Pointing out that not everyone would agree with the term “compromise”, Kosiniak-Kamysz specified that he meant “restoring the state that existed before the judgment of the Constitutional Court” in 2020.

– Certainly, at this point, women’s sense of security would increase, because it was radically lost by this sentence – he said.

“Politicians can’t solve this issue”

According to the chairman PSL “Politicians are unable to resolve this issue.” He argued that the issue should be put to a referendum.

– I have my own personal opinion, but I do not want to impose my opinion on such an important issue. I can promise as a politician that I will implement the result of this referendum. We will write such a law. Whether I like this decision in the referendum or not, we will implement it, he announced. He added that the vote would be preceded by a “citizens’ panel”.

– This cannot be done ad hoc, it must be well thought out – he stressed. He added that it cannot be just one question.

Kosiniak-Kamysz pointed out that “there are many more women in society than in parliament.” – Why are we afraid of the voice of millions of women? – He was asking.

“We have freedom in worldview matters”

Asked whether in the next parliament, if the opposition won the majority, the law liberalizing abortion would have a chance to be adopted, he replied that he did not think such a project would pass, because “not all MPs would vote for it”.

– Do you expect that MPs from the Civic Coalition and the left will have an independent majority? – he said, asking the host of “FpF”.

When asked whether PSL itself would support the liberalization of abortion laws, he repeated that he would certainly vote “for restoring the provisions before the Constitutional Court’s verdict.”

“I have the feeling that the vast majority of my club would vote in favour. We have freedom in matters of worldview, he stressed.

According to Kosiniak-Kamysz, “democracy will either move towards a more direct democracy, or it will be a breeding ground for authoritarian rule.”
