Dr. Maciej Socha, a gynecologist from the St. Wojciech in Gdańsk, commenting in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 on the tragedy in Pszczyna, where a pregnant woman died, because doctors were supposed to wait for the fetus to die, said: – We, doctors, are afraid every day, working in such a sensitive matter as obstetrics and perinatology. Dominika Wielowieyska from “Gazeta Wyborcza” stated that if in this case medical procedures were applied before the judgment of the Constitutional Tribunal tightening the abortion law, 30-year-old Izabela “would have a chance to survive”.

On Saturday, protests were held in dozens of Polish cities after the death of a pregnant 30-year-old woman from Pszczynawho died after doctors had to wait for her fetus to die. This case was described on October 29 by legal counsel Jolanta Budzowska, representative of the deceased family. She wrote that it was a consequence of last year’s judgment of the Constitutional Tribunal, chaired by Julia Przyłębska, which tightened the abortion law. The prosecutor’s office deals with the case.

The Poviat Hospital in Pszczyna decided to suspend the performance of the contracts of two doctors who were on duty during the stay of a 30-year-old pregnant Mrs. Izabela.

This situation was commented on by Dr. Maciej Socha, head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the St. Wojciech in Gdańsk and Dominika Wielowieyska, a journalist for “Gazeta Wyborcza”.

Dr. Socha, commenting on the tragedy in Pszczyna, said that “it is a great loss, both for the family, and a great pain for doctors”. – We, doctors, are afraid every day, working in such a sensitive matter as obstetrics and perinatology (…), we are afraid for patients, that the risk of complications will materialize – he continued.

He pointed out that in practice there are many doubts as to the exact situations in which the still legal premise of abortion can be applied, which says that a pregnancy can be terminated when there is a risk to the mother’s life or health.

– We, as doctors, always choose one of the therapeutic options. It is not that we have a choice between a good and a bad method, we usually have a better and a worse method. We simply work with the tools we can work with, he continued.

Wielowieyska: there is no escaping responsibility here

Dominika Wielowieyska also talked about the situation. – All doctors say that before the ruling of the Tribunal by Julia Przyłębska, the procedures were different, also in the case of anhydrous, (…) the procedures were such that an artificial miscarriage was induced – she pointed out.

She stated that “if these pre-judgment procedures had been followed in Izabela’s case, she would have had a chance to survive.” – I want to tell all PiS politicians once again: it is Izabela’s voice from beyond the grave that is an accusation against them. Because she writes why doctors are waiting because of the abortion law, it is all in text messages to the mother, there is no escape from responsibility, there is no possibility of explaining here – the journalist continued.

– Of course, I would appeal to the conscience of PiS and Confederation politicians to change the law that murders women, but I know what I will hear: that I am a moron – she said, thus referring to statements of the deputy speaker of the Sejm on behalf of PiS, Ryszard Terleckiwho replied that one of the women was a moron.
