They are against the liberalization of the abortion law, but they want the government to take firm action in the fight against the climate crisis. The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung eV Foundation has published a report on the political preferences of young Poles. The results may surprise you. The author of the report, Adam Kądziela, spoke about them on TVN24 in “You Get Up and Weekend”.

The “young Poles” covered by the study are people aged 18 to 30. – Among the total adult population, this is a population of 15%, over 4.5 million people. For comparison, people over 60 constitute over 25 percent of voters, pointed out Adam Kądziela, the author of the study.

He also emphasized that when analyzing the research, it is worth paying attention to the methodology according to which it was conducted. – Please note that very often we infer from samples of the general population. Very often in Poland, research is not conducted on a specific social group, as these studies are conducted on the general population, 1000 people. We, bearing in mind how important this social group is, bearing in mind the myths that circulate in the public space, wanted to study only this group and we have been studying it since 2019 with the Adenauer Foundation – explained the guest of “Wstasz i Weekend”.

Who will young people vote for?

The results of the study may surprise you. – The fight for votes is between the opposition groups. In the survey, we also asked who you voted for in 2019 and who you will vote for in 2023. And this is a very interesting result, because 93 percent of those who voted for Law and Justice they intend to repeat that vote. On the other hand, the flows of the electorate between the Civic Coalition, the Confederation and the Left are very large. And even PSL and Konfederacja, 30 percent of PSL voters want to vote for Konfederacja. 16 percent of Civic Coalition voters from 2019 want to vote for Konfederacja today. And even, which is a phenomenon justified in the social sciences, there is a 10% flow between the voters of the Left and the Confederation. This is based on contesting the current political order – said Kądziela.

The image of a young Confederation voter in the Election Portrait of Young Poles 2023 looks a bit different than in other studies. These people support, among others, the postulate of greater involvement of the government in combating the effects of the climate catastrophe, as well as accepting refugees, which is contrary to the views of politicians of their chosen party and its program.

– For the time being, I observe the mechanism of denial from various sides of the political scene. I think it’s a road to nowhere. Instead of displacing quantitative research, we should try to reach, deepen this research and understand this portrait of young people. It is true that there are seemingly contradictory information, but the young electorate is as diverse as the electorate of other parties and has the right to answer different questions in different ways. Let’s see that these people do not declare themselves to be left-wing or right-wing. To the question “How do you identify your views?” the vast majority answered that they declared themselves outside this scale. They do not fit into the rigid framework of left-rightism – notes the author of the study.

0.1 percent patriotism

Kądziela indicates that almost 60 percent of all respondents are against the liberalization of access to abortion, and at the same time the vast majority is in favor of the separation of the state and the Church – also in the electorate of Law and Justice. 17 percent say they will vote for PiS, 24.7 for KO, 19.2 for Konfederacja, 14.1 for Left, 9.5 for Poland 2050.

Participants of the study were asked, among other things, what values are most important to them in life. The majority indicated family (13.5%), ideological or economic freedom (10.9%), health (9.3%), ecology (8.9%), friendship (7.6%), sense of security (7.6%) or good education (7.2%).

Less popular were: cultural life (5.1%), professional life (4.7%), events and adventures (4.7%), faith (4%) and helping others (4%). ). The fewest respondents indicated love and intimate relationships as the most important values in life (3.3%), prosperity (3.3%), peace in life (3.2%), socio-political activity (2.6%) and and patriotism (0.1%). Participants in the study could only choose one answer to this question.

– In the social sciences, it is hardly surprising that the family is in the first place, but the big surprise is, of course, the percentage of people who identify with patriotic values and, what is extremely sad, with socio-political activity. Somewhere after 1989, a mistake was made related to civic education and the involvement of young people in social and political life, assesses Kądziela.

Fighting the climate crisis

The young people were also asked whether the government should take decisive steps in the fight against the climate crisis. 65.9 percent of the respondents gave the answer “rather agree”, and “rather disagree” 19.7 percent of people. A firm “yes” was chosen by 13.4 percent, and only 1 percent were strongly against the government’s decisive steps in the fight against the climate crisis.

The author of the study noted that some PiS voters expressed interest in fighting the climate crisis to the least extent of all the respondents. – Interestingly, we also asked people who do not want to go to the elections, what factors would motivate them to go to the elections. At that time, this group of respondents had to indicate three most important factors, and among these factors, economic issues come first, but climate issues come third. This is an important postulate to be developed – points out Kądziela.

Access to abortion

When asked about the liberalization of the abortion law, the majority (58.5%) were against it. “I tend to agree” marked 36.1 percent. respondents, and definitely “yes” and definitely “no” respectively 4.1 percent and 1.3 percent.

– This is probably the question that evokes the most emotion and attempts to question these results are based on this question. I would like to point out that two years ago the Daszyński Institute organized a similar study asking about abortion rights. He worded the questions a little differently, giving the opportunity to choose the way of liberalization or the way of tightening the abortion law, and the distribution was very similar, 40:60. It is worth noting that young people are not only inhabitants of big cities. They are not residents of large urban centers, almost 45 percent of them live in the countryside. We need to be aware that these views are formed in a different way – explains the author of the study.

Kądziela estimates that the so-called The “silent majority”, which is usually not asked for its opinion, does not want to liberalize the abortion law. In his opinion, a different formulation of the question and clarification of the principles of potential liberalization would not affect the result of the study.

IVF, contraception, euro

When asked about financing in vitro and contraception from the state budget, the majority of respondents (49.4%) answered that “rather agree”. “Rather disagree” 36.1 percent, and definitely “for” and “against” 10.3 percent. and 4.3 percent 70% disagreed with this proposal. PiS voters, and it was supported by over 80 percent. KO voters. – There is a dichotomy between the voters of the ruling party and the Civic Coalition and other groups – indicates the author of the study.

66.8 percent respondents rather disagree that Poland should join the euro area, and 15.8 percent. is strongly against it. Rather, 12.8 percent agree. surveyed, and 4.7 percent are definitely on “yes”.

– The general population we study does not remember the reality from before the European Union. The question is whether all young people were the beneficiaries of membership in the European Union, whether all young people received information about the benefits of membership in the euro area or the negatives. For the time being, the public space is dominated by an image that questions the benefits of the eurozone, assesses Kądziela.
