Abramów. A 53-year-old pedestrian has died. The police are asking for help in identifying the perpetrator

The services received the report on Sunday at 7:20 p.m. A pedestrian was hit on Szkolna Street in Abramów.

“According to preliminary information, the driver of a passenger car (most likely gray or silver in color) hit a pedestrian on the road and then drove away from the scene towards Łąkowa Street and further to Wola Przybysławska, without providing him with help,” he writes in the release. Staff Sergeant Jagoda Maj from the District Police Headquarters in Lubartów.

The 53-year-old pedestrian died on the spot.

“The incident took place in a built-up area, on a straight section of the road,” the policewoman emphasizes.

The officers are explaining the circumstances of the incident and asking anyone with any information about it to contact them. Including recordings from car video recorders that could help identify the perpetrator.

Every year, over 20,000 road accidents occur on Polish roads. In 2023, according to unofficial data, 1,669 people died and 22,944 were injured. A year earlier, these were 1,896 and 24,743 people, respectively.

In 9 out of 10 accidents, the drivers were at fault. Young drivers aged 18-24 had the highest rate of accidents per 10,000 inhabitants. The cause of nearly 35 percent of the accidents they caused was the failure to adjust speed to traffic conditions.

After changing the regulations on pedestrian priority at crossings, withdrawing driving licenses for gross speed violations and increasing fines, the statistics of the last few years show that safety on Polish roads has improved. In 2019, there were 2,909 fatalities, almost 1,300 more than in 2023.
