The first batch of Abrams tanks for Poland is to arrive on Tuesday evening by ship to the port of Szczecin-Świnoujście, said the head of the Ministry of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak. – We have trained the crews from the 1st Warsaw Armored Brigade, so the soldiers will take over the equipment that will be equipped with this brigade – he added.

Head of the Ministry of National Defence Mariusz Blaszczak announced in Warsaw during the celebration of the General Command of the Armed Forces that “tonight a ship will arrive at the port of Szczecin-Świnoujście with the first Abrams tanks on board, tanks that we acquired from the United States.”

– We already have trained soldiers thanks to our cooperation, mainly with the V Corps of the US Army, but generally speaking, together with our American ally, we opened Abrams Academy at the training ground in Biedrusko. We have trained crews from the 1st Warsaw Armored Brigade, so the soldiers will take over the equipment that will be equipped with this brigade, said the head of the Ministry of National Defense.

– The 1st Warsaw Armored Brigade is a unit of the 18th Mechanized Division, the “Iron Division”, whose task is to defend the eastern borders of the Republic of Poland – he noted. – Defense by deterrence, by building interoperability, by cooperation mainly with the forces of the United States – added Błaszczak.

This is the first delivery under the contract concluded in January this year. agreements between the Ministry of National Defense and the government USA for 116 M1A1 Abrams tanks and accompanying equipment, including 12 M88 Hercules recovery vehicles, assault bridges and command vehicles. The value of the contract is approx. USD 1.4 billion net, of which nearly USD 200 million is covered by the American side as part of the aid funds granted to Poland. The US also agreed to sell ammunition to Poland, including sub-caliber bullets with a depleted uranium core.

Deliveries of tanks and other equipment are scheduled for 2023-24. The tanks, previously used by the U.S. Marine Corps, are undergoing a thorough overhaul and will be delivered with their mileage reset.

The purchase of 116 retired Marine Corps Abrams was made to expedite equipment replenishment following donations to Ukraine.

In April last year, Poland ordered 250 Abrams in the most modern M1A2 SEPv3 version for USD 4.7 billion, which are to be delivered in 2024-2026.

Poland bought the Abrams as the first European country and the first NATO country outside the United States.
