Act decriminalizing abortion – what will PSL do?

TVN24 reporters Agata Adamek and Radomir Wit talked in the “W Kuluarach” program about the upcoming session of the Sejm, which will start on Wednesday. The first reading of the bill on decriminalization of abortion is to take place there. The previous project on this matter was rejectedamong other votes PSLwhich caused disputes in the government coalition.

– This is the bill that ended up in the trash with a few votes, causing a huge political storm. Now we come back to this. I hear from PSL that there is a good chance that it will not end up in the trash, and that further work will be carried out. This means that the motion to throw it into the trash bin will not be accepted immediately, which will be important for the coalition on a symbolic level – said Agata Adamek.

– On Tuesday, the last round of negotiations and final concluding talks are to be held in this matter, but I hear that there is a prospect that there will be voices in favor of continuing the process and not rejecting it. This is the variant that is now on the table – added Radomir Wit.

– The case will be a matter of a vote and a hair's breadth – said Agata Adamek.

On July 12, the Sejm did not adopt the amendment to the Penal Code, submitted by the Left Club, regarding the partial decriminalization of abortion. There were a few votes missing then. In the second half of July, the project was submitted again. It assumes, among others: repeal of two provisions of Art. 152 of the Penal Code, which provides for a penalty of 3 years in prison for terminating a pregnancy with the woman's consent in cases not permitted by law, and for inducing it to be done.

There is an extraordinary committee in the Sejm, appointed to work on four bills related to abortion. The first of them is the Left's project regarding the decriminalization of acts related to termination of pregnancy. There are also two projects (Left and KO) introducing the possibility of abortion up to the 12th week at the woman's will. Third Way, in turn, proposes in its project a return to the state before the Constitutional Tribunal's judgment of 2020, i.e. restoring the possibility of abortion in the event of the likelihood of a severe fetal defect. He also wants to organize a referendum on abortion regulations
