Act on the Silesian language. This is the decision of President Andrzej Duda

The President vetoed the amendment to the Act on National and Ethnic Minorities, which recognizes the Silesian language as a regional language – informed the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland.

On April 26, the Sejm passed a law recognizing the Silesian language as a regional language. Supported by the Civic Coalition, Third Way and the Left, the bill was sent to the Senate and then to the president Andrzej Duda.

This was the eighth attempt

The bill was submitted on January 25, 2024 by a group of KO MPs. This was the eighth parliamentary attempt to recognize the Silesian language as a regional language or Silesians as an ethnic minority.

For the first time, a parliamentary project on the recognition of the Silesian language appeared in 2007. On the same day, it was decided to shorten the term of office of the parliament. Further drafts were submitted in 2010 and 2012, but were never discussed in plenary. In 2014, a citizens' bill on the recognition of Silesians as an ethnic minority was submitted to the Sejm, signed by 140,000 people. citizens. He was sent to work on a committee, whose motion was to reject him. The parliamentary bill regarding Ślonska Godka did not receive a printing number in 2018, and it did not receive its first reading in 2020. In turn, in 2023, a parliamentary bill on the recognition of the Silesian ethnic minority was prepared, but before it was dealt with, the term of office ended.

During the 2021 census, 596,224 people declared Silesian nationality, including 236,588 as the first and 187,372 as the only one. 467,145 people confirmed that they used the Silesian language at home, of which 54,957 were the only ones.

“You don't have to be afraid of Silesia”

On May 7, the Prime Minister appealed to sign the act on the Silesian language Donald Tusk with actress and Silesian Grażyna Bułka. “Mr. President, sign this act. So, take a pen and write it down,” wrote the Prime Minister.

He turned to the president. – You don't have to be afraid of Silesia, you don't have to be afraid of ethnic communities, you don't have to be afraid of the Silesian language. This is the great heritage of Silesia, Poland and Europe – he said.

Over 130 representatives of the world of culture, science and media signed an appeal to the president to recognize the Silesian language as a regional language. These included, among others Olga Tokarczukwho received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2019, and the chairwoman of the Polish Language Council, Professor Katarzyna Kłosińska.

On May 15, when asked about the law, Andrzej Duda said that most scientists believe that there are many dialects in Silesia, most often of a local nature.
