The activities of the National Broadcasting Council towards TVN are Putin’s standard – commented in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 Jarosław Kurski, deputy editor-in-chief of “Gazeta Wyborcza”. Bartosz Węglarczyk, editor-in-chief of the Onet.pl portal, said that “in relation to free media, this authority most often uses such means as harassment, lawsuits, demands for rectification.” He drew attention to the situation of smaller, local media that cannot afford lawyers.

In December, we received a letter from the National Broadcasting Council informing that in connection with the broadcast of Piotr Świerczek’s report “The Power of a Lie”, the chairman of the Council initiated ex officio proceedings to punish us. We are accused of “promoting activities contrary to the law, the Polish raison d’état and actions that threaten security” and “unreliability and non-objectivity”. KRRiT however, she did not provide a single concrete evidence to support her allegations.

The reportage “The Power of Lies” can be viewed on dozens of websites

Dozens of the largest nationwide and local media as a sign of solidarity with our editorial team, decided to publish Piotr Świerczek’s material on its website.

Statement by the editors of “Fakty” TVN and TVN24 on the material “The power of lies”

Kurski: These are Putin’s standards

– I am really built by the mass support for TVN – said Jarosław Kurski, who was a guest of “Fakty po Faktach” on Wednesday evening. He expressed the conviction that strength lies only in unity and truth. They don’t want the truth, they want propaganda. This next attempt to harass TVN shows that you are simply an excellent station, you do an excellent journalistic job – said the TVN24 guest.

In his opinion, such actions of the authorities are “Putin’s standard”. – Macierewicz does not go to any independent court, he goes to the authority taken over by this authority in order to impose a penalty on an independent station – noted Kurski.

In his opinion, “it is characteristic that towards free media this authority most often uses such means as harassment, lawsuits, demands for rectification.” He noted that he uses public funds for this, so he does it “for our money”.

Węglarczyk: Let’s think about small, local media that can’t afford to go to court

Węglarczyk stated that “Putin’s standards in destroying the media are not about putting journalists in prison, not about killing them, although we know that this is done in Russia He pointed out that “foreign broadcasters were removed from Russia, making publishing media in this country unprofitable.”

– We’re going this way. It consists in the fact that publishers, media owners are forced to spend money on lawyers. The point is to encourage our owners to leave Poland or to close the media at some point. This year we will see it on an unprecedented scale – said the editor-in-chief of Onet.pl.

In his opinion, “this power is so close to losing this power that it will do everything and will fight for every vote, both at election rallies and commercials, and, for example, by sending lawsuits against the media.”

– We all represent the big media here, but let’s think about the small, local media that can’t afford to go to court, that can’t afford to hire lawyers. Such media can be dealt with with one or two lawsuits. How many cases do we know in Poland where local small media prefer to shut down because they can’t afford to spend a few thousand zlotys on a lawyer? the journalist wondered.

Bartosz Węglarczyk on “Putin’s standards in destroying the media” TVN24

Report “The Power of Lies”, premiered on September 12, 2022 on TVN24, is the result of many months of work by TVN24 journalist Piotr Świerczek. The author has accessed recordings, photos and international expert opinions concerning catastrophe in Smolensk in 2010, which – although they were commissioned by the so-called Antoni Macierewicz’s Smolensk Subcommittee – were never included in its reports, including the last one, which was supposed to be the final report. These materials either explicitly exclude an attack or point to a catastrophe as the cause of the tragedy. Świerczek also talked to people who worked for the subcommittee, but do not agree with its conclusions that there was an attack in Smolensk. What’s more, the journalist’s interlocutors directly say that their research has been manipulated or selectively used for theses assumed in advance by the subcommittee.

The reportage was awarded in 2022 with the Grand Press award in the Investigative Journalism category. Piotr Świerczek is also the author of the reportages “The Power of Facts” and “The Power of Sound”.
