Alec Baldwin fatally shot a cinematographer on a movie set. The actor said he was “working fully” with the police to “explain how this tragedy happened.” According to the first findings of the officers, the assistant director who handed Baldwin the prop did not know that it had real bullets in it.

Alec Baldwin fatally shot 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the western “Rust”. He also hurt movie director Joel Souza. According to preliminary police findings, an accident occurred on a movie set in New Mexico.

First police findings

Hutchins and Souza “were shot when prop firearms were unlocked by 63-year-old Alec Baldwin, producer and actor,” said the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.

It was also reported that no one had been detained in relation to the incident and no charges had been brought. Officers questioned witnesses and the investigation is ongoing.

According to police findings, the shot hit the cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in the chest, and the director Joel Souza, who was standing behind her, in the shoulder. The assistant director who handed Baldwin the prop didn’t know there were real bullets in it.

According to Joel Cano, an officer of the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department, the tragic incident occurred during the rehearsal, and it is unclear whether the incident was filmed. He added that the prop was one of three such items that lay on a cart outside the building. One of them was picked up by the assistant director of the movie, who went inside and handed it to Baldwin.

“When an assistant director handed the gun to actor Alec Baldwin, (he) shouted ‘cold gun’, indicating that the gun did not contain live ammunition,” the statement said.

Questions about working conditions on the set of the film

The investigation raised questions about working conditions on the set of Rust, a low-budget western in which Baldwin is both a star and co-producer. The production of the film has been suspended.

According to Reuters news agency, the Los Angeles Times and Deadline Hollywood quoted several crew members and others close to the production, saying that six or seven camera operators left the set hours before the tragedy. “We cited everything. From not being paid for three weeks, no hotels even though we asked for them in our contracts, non-compliance with sanitary restrictions, to poor gun protection! Poor security on set!” – wrote one of the team members on social media.
