SAG-AFTRA, the American actors’ union, officially went on strike. Its members demand higher salaries and regulation of issues related to the development of artificial intelligence. In the evening, it was reported that two actors had left the London premiere of “Oppenheimer”.

Oppenheimer stars Emily Blunt and Cilian Murphy missed Thursday’s London premiere, the BBC reported, citing director Christopher Nolan.

Earlier, at a press conference, the union’s executive director and chief negotiator admitted that the strike was “a tool of last resort”. “We were left with no alternative,” he said.

SAG-AFTRA represents 160,000 actors. In a vote organized in early June within the union, 97.91 percent. of the votes cast supported the authorization of the strike. Actors demand higher salaries and protection against unauthorized use of their images by artificial intelligence.

In a union letter to members calling for votes to authorize the strike, SAG-AFTRA leaders said the industry had changed drastically. This is related to the development of streaming television and the emergence of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence.

“We have fully entered the era of the digital and streaming entertainment industry. This requires an agreement appropriate to the new business model,” the letter said.
