He assessed that “ambitious tasks” lie ahead of our country and “in order to accomplish them, close cooperation between the president, the government and the Sejm and the Senate is needed.” – Therefore, tomorrow I will submit a bill that will define the framework of this cooperation in the context of Poland’s presidency of the work of the Council of the European Union – he announced.

President Andrzej Duda delivered a speech on Tuesday evening. As he recalled, “exactly 20 years ago there was a referendum on the matter Poland’s accession to the European Union“On June 7 and 8, 2003, Poles made a historic decision. With an overwhelming majority, they voted for accession to the EU, and thus confirmed Poland’s belonging to the Western world,” he said.

President: It is clear that Poland’s accession to the EU was a good decision

– Like millions of Poles, I took part in the referendum and voted “for”. I remembered the words of the saint John Paul IIthat Poland needs Europe, and Europe needs Poland, that our homeland should join the Union, that we should participate in shaping it in accordance with the values we profess since we joined the family of Christian nations of Europe over a thousand years ago, recalled the president.

Andrzej Duda: I will submit a bill tomorrow

The president pointed out that “today Europe is going through a difficult time”. – Faces the consequences of brutal Russian aggression on Ukraine. This presents us with new challenges. In order to meet them, cooperation and forward-looking thinking are needed, as well as planning key issues well in advance, he said.

In his opinion, “the upcoming Polish presidency in the European Union, which we will take over in 1.5 years, is one of such issues.” “We have to be perfectly prepared for it,” he stressed.

– That is why on May 1 this year, on the anniversary of Poland’s accession to the European Union, together with the Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki I outlined the three objectives of our Presidency. The first is to deepen transatlantic cooperation and strengthen relations between the European Union and the United States. The second goal is to further expand the community to include Ukraine, Moldova and the Western Balkans, and in the future also other countries aspiring to join it. The third objective will be to strengthen Europe’s energy security. These are ambitious tasks. In order to implement them, close cooperation between the president, the government and the Sejm and the Senate is needed, he said.

– Therefore, tomorrow I will submit a bill that will define the framework of this cooperation in the context of Poland’s presidency of the work of the Council of the European Union. I would like this initiative to prove that the entire political class can cooperate harmoniously on issues that are most important to Poland. This is an important test for all political forces. A test of which of them want to cooperate to achieve our goals in the European Union – he assessed.

President Duda called for “the act to be adopted immediately”. – I am convinced that only through cooperation can we make good use of the unique opportunity offered to us by the EU presidency, and thus effectively ensure the implementation of Poland’s interest on the international arena – he added.
