At least 16 people died on Sunday during an approximately three-hour firefight between Taliban security forces and a group of armed attackers in the city of Herat in western Afghanistan. There are seven children among the victims.
The other dead people were: three women and six men. Their bodies were transported to hospital, the German dpa agency found out.
Clashes in Herat, killed, destroyed building
A spokesman for the Taliban interior ministry, Kari Said Chosti, said in turn that three armed attackers who hid at home have been killed. The dpa agency reports that the photos from the scene showed a completely destroyed building.
Initially, local media reported that the Taliban was fighting an armed group that had joined the jihadist organization Islamic State. Taliban fighters have been fighting it since 2015, when it first appeared in Afghanistan.
Ever since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in August, the so-called Islamic State has launched a series of deadly attacks targeting Taliban security forces and Shi’ite facilities of worship. In October, the organization took responsibility for two bombings in the north and south of the country, killing at least 100 people in total.
