Agnieszka Szydłowska has become the new director of the Third Program – the radio station announced on its website. The station emphasized that this decision “is the first step to rebuilding Trójka.” Szydłowska is to take up her position on Thursday.

– Agnieszka Szydłowska returns to Trójka with experience and understanding of the uniqueness of this antenna, and at the same time guarantees the creation of an inspiring radio alternative. Thanks to her, Trójka has a chance to express its intense cultural and musical voice and propose unconventional meetings between artists and listeners. I am sure that Agnieszka Szydłowska will restore the glory and reputation it deserves to Trójka, and the last years on Myśliwiecka Street will be forgotten. I am convinced that the changes that will soon be initiated by the new head of the antenna will also result in the return of business partners’ trust in Trójka – said Paweł Majcher, editor-in-chief of Polish Radio, quoted in the release.

– I see public radio as a space of intellectual freedom, vigilance on social and cultural issues, a natural place for meetings and conversations. We must rebuild the potential and trust that our customers have placed in us in recent years, adapting to the times in which we do it. We want to be wherever our potential customers are. The trio will actively join the discussion on the future shape of public media, listening to the voices of activists, people professionally involved in media research, intellectual and artistic circles – said Szydłowska.

As reported, the new director of Trójka is to start work on Thursday, January 18.

Agnieszka Szydłowska on Polish Radio

Agnieszka Szydłowska worked at Trójka for 17 years. She co-hosted, among others, Radio House of Culture program. She left the station in May 2020. Her decision was related to the 1998 listing of the Polish Radio 3 Hits Chart. Kazik’s song “Your pain is better than mine” debuted in first place on this list. Information about it quickly however, it disappeared from the pages of the state radio. Then, the then director and editor-in-chief of Trójka, Tomasz Kowalczewski, stated that during the vote “the regulations were broken” and “the editorial team decided to invalidate the vote.”

Szydłowska announced her departure from Trójka on social media. In a post on Facebook, she admitted that she “was struggling with the decision” for a long time because “she was born for public radio, because the mission is in her blood.” She estimated that the “final chord” for her was the “pandemic schedule”. “In fact, it plowed our antenna, depriving listeners of their favorite programs. And – which I greatly regret – access to cultural information and exchange of ideas,” wrote the journalist. “What happened next – you know. Marek, Hirek, Marcin. Continuation of the infamous list,” she added.

In recent years, Szydłowska has worked at Newonce.radio. Before she got involved with Polish Radio, she was a journalist at Radio Harcerska. Later, she also cooperated with public television, where she hosted programs such as “Pegaz”, “After Hours”, and “Tygodnik Kultury”.

Changes in the media

On December 19, 2023, the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, decided to dismiss the existing and appoint new supervisory boards of TVP, Polskie Radio and PAP, which changed the companies’ management boards. Tomasz Sygut was announced as the new president of Telewizja Polska. The decision of the head of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage was criticized by politicians PISwho assessed that it was illegal.

At the same time, the budget-related act includes a provision on the possibility of transferring money from the state budget to public media. In total, it amounted to nearly PLN 3 billion. The act states that the minister responsible for the budget, i.e. the Minister of Finance, “may transfer” such funds, but is not obliged to do so. Finance Minister Andrzej Domański emphasized that the payment was suspended for now.

Due to the president’s decision to suspend financing of public media, Minister of Culture Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz decided to liquidate TVP, PR and PAP, and later also 17 regional companies of Polish Radio stations.
