“I was saddened to learn that six Alabama residents were killed in the storms that devastated our entire state. I am praying for their loved ones and community. We know this devastating weather all too well, but our people are resilient. We will survive and we will be stronger,” said Alabama Governor Kay Ivey.

Millions of people at risk. “Glass was everywhere”

On Thursday, a state of emergency was declared in six of Alabama’s hardest hit counties storms: Autauga, Chambers, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore and Tallapoosa. Ray Hogg, a resident of Selma, the hardest hit town, took shelter in a nearby clubhouse when the tornado hit.

– You could hear that roar. There was glass everywhere. We could hear the roof being literally ripped off right above our heads. It was terrible,” he told Reuters.

In parts of Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama, strong gusts of wind and heavy rainfall damaged homes and left tens of thousands without power. More than 25 tornadoes passed through the region, according to CNN. Severe storms threaten about 35 million inhabitants. More than 250 flights have been canceled or delayed at Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina international airports.
