Mass protests in Tirana. Thousands of demonstrators demanded the resignation of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama on Saturday. The protesters accuse him of corruption and the bad economic situation of the country. The seat of the government was pelted with smoke bombs and Molotov cocktails, reported the portal of Radio Free Europe.

The former president and prime minister took part in the protests Albania Sali Berisha from the opposition Democratic Party of Albania and former president Ilir Meta from the Freedom Party, also currently in opposition to the rule of Prime Minister Rama.

“The time has come for this revolution to turn corrupt fortunes into higher wages and pension – called on Berisha, speaking in front of the demonstrators gathered in Tirana. The politician appealed to USA and the European Union to investigate corruption scandals of which the opposition accuses the Albanian authorities.

During the protests, smoke bombs, incendiary bottles and paint-filled balloons were thrown at the headquarters of the Albanian government, surrounded by police and barricades.

Prime Minister Edi Rama’s critics, apart from allegations of corruption, blame him for the mass exodus of young Albanians looking for work in Western European countries.

Berisha called on the demonstrators for more protests next Monday.
