Alexei Navalny really wanted to change Russia, of course he was also a very ambitious man and he perfectly understood that if he wanted to bring about changes in Russia, if he wanted to overthrow the Putin regime, he had to be in Russia – said the long-time correspondent of “Fakty” TVN on TVN24 in Moscow Andrzej Zaucha.

Alexei Navalny is dead, Reuters reported, citing a statement from the Russian penal colony where the oppositionist was imprisoned.

Zaucha: Navalny has become virtually Putin’s only opponent

The guest of TVN24 was Andrzej Zaucha, a long-time correspondent of “Fakty” TVN in Moscow. – We can already say that it was a symbol, but for many years, I think for at least ten years, since Boris Nemtsov was killed right next to the Kremlin, Navalny has become practically the only opponent Vladimir Putin – he said.

– He was the only man who could challenge him, who could mobilize millions of people and did mobilize millions of people against Putin, criticizing what he was doing, criticizing his entire system, his regime. Very harsh, very ruthless. A very, very brave man, he continued.

– A man who made the decision to return to… Russia. After he was poisoned, he was on the verge of life and death. He was in a coma. (…) Navalny miraculously managed to be saved and he was taken to… German, where he was undergoing treatment for a long time and decided to come back. (…) It was known that he would be arrested immediately. It was known that he would be sentenced to prison for many years, he added.

Zaucha: there is no doubt that Putin hated him

As he said, “if he stayed in the West, he would live peacefully, safely, he would be cared for and watched over.” When asked why Navalny decided to return to Russia, he replied that “Navalny really wanted to change Russia, of course he was also a very ambitious man and he understood perfectly well that if he wanted to bring about changes in Russia, if he wanted to overthrow the Putin regime, he had to be in Russia”.

– I think he assumed that Putin’s regime was already so ossified, so rotten, so rotten that when he returned, he would spend even a few years in prison – and we heard his voice all the time from prison – his presence in Russia would lead to that this regime will finally start to fall apart, he said. – He simply staked his life in the name of Russia, hoping that he would be able to change Russia, even while in prison – he added.

Andrzej Zaucha said that “there is no doubt that Putin hated him.” – And it was he who gave the order that Navalny should be dealt with as badly as possible. That he has to be in such conditions for him to finally break. However, Navalny did not give up. This also needs to be emphasized. A man of extremely great fortitude, he said.

Alexei Navalny

In recent years, Navalny has organized thousands of anti-government demonstrations in Russia and opposed corruption. He was arrested in January 2021 at the airport in Moscow when he returned from Germany, where he was undergoing treatment after an attempted poisoning.
