Car manufacturer Alfa Romeo announced that its new car, which will be produced in Tychy, will not be called Milano, as previously announced, but Junior. This happened a few days after the Italian government criticized the original name of the model.

The dispute over the new car, which is to be built in a Polish factory belonging to the automotive giant Stellantis, broke out when the Italian Minister for Companies and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, stated that “a car called Milano cannot be produced in Poland.”

The head of the ministry referred to the Italian law prohibiting the practice of the so-called Italian sounding, a marketing trick that involves using Italian or similar names to suggest to customers that the product comes from Italy.

On Monday, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato said: “Even though we believe that the Milano name complies with all legal regulations, and considering that there are current topics of greater importance than the name of a new car, Alfa Romeo decides to change the name from Milano on Junior, with the aim of promoting an atmosphere of peace and relaxation.

Ansa reported that sources in the Italian government expressed “great satisfaction” with the carmaker's decision. The agency's interlocutors explained that the decision was made after talks with the Stellantis concern, to which the government informed that such practices carry the risk of causing damage to production on Italian territory.
