The rulers did little to solve the problem with Ukrainian grain. They knew there was a problem in February. It was then that the Polish authorities were to inform Brussels for the first time about the detection of pesticides banned in the European Union. Material of the magazine “Polska i Świat”.

The problems of Polish farmers with Ukrainian grain began many months ago. The effect is that today there is nothing to do with this Polish. Since last July when European Union abolished tariffs and quotas on agri-food products z Ukraineuntil April 15 this year, those in power did very little to say nothing about the crisis.

– I know the farmers talked about it. We did not underestimate it, only the ladder of various actions had its escalation and today these are the most radical actions – says Deputy Finance Minister Artur Soboń.

In order for transit grain not to stay in the country, a deposit system or GPS controls could be introduced. There were several ideas – it was enough to want. – If you pay at the border when entering Poland and return the deposits when leaving, then someone would either have to pay a lot or transfer the grain – says Piotr Kuczyński, financial analyst of Dom Inwestycyjny Xelion.

Concerns about the quality of Ukrainian grain

According to various estimates, there are several million tons of grain from the east on the Polish market. The prosecutor’s office in Rzeszów is to answer questions about the quality of cereals from Ukraine.

– Prosecutors are investigating the issue of unfavorable disposal of property of great value in the amount of PLN 1.5 million of Polish feed and food producers and the concealment that the grain was imported from Ukraine as technical grain – indicates the spokeswoman of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Rzeszów, Hanna Biernat-Łożańska.

As reported by RMF FM, already in February, Polish authorities began to inform Brussels for the first time that pesticides banned in the European Union had been detected in cereals.

– This substance was withdrawn, among other things, because it was very harmful to pollinators, and therefore the European Union made such a decision out of concern for the health of all of us – stresses Radosław Iwański, editor-in-chief of “Farmer”.

Farmers already in autumn alarmed that Ukrainian grain may contain plant protection products, pesticide residues and other compounds dangerous to humans. Farmers report that in February, then Minister Henryk Kowalczyk was to inform about the introduction of selective veterinary checks only from January.

Questions about grain quality testing from Ukraine

The journalists turned to the institutions that control Ukrainian grain. In the case of fodder, these are the Chief Veterinary Inspectorate, the Sanitary Inspectorate for consumption and the Commercial Quality Inspection.

The Chief Inspectorate of Plant Health and Seed Inspection in the sent statement indicates that it has carried out over 400 inspections and found no irregularities, although it points out that the quality of seed for sowing is always very high.

The import of Ukrainian grain means that the grain produced by Polish farmers lingers in warehouses. Pomeranian representatives of this professional group will join the farmers' protest on Thursday.

– Border sanitary and epidemiological stations in Dorohusk, Hrebenne and Przemyśl, i.e. those responsible for inspections of food coming from Ukraine, carried out 27,000 inspections in 2022, and 5,419 this year – says spokesman for the Chief Sanitary Inspector Szymon Cienki.

The data of the Sanepid concern mainly grain, but also other products. Pesticides were detected in six shipments. The inspections concerned only grain declared in the documents as consumable, and no one examined the so-called technical grain.

– We need to sell the surplus, but which one? Polish or Ukrainian? Information spreads around the world that agricultural production is not at the same level of quality security as in the European Union – says Radosław Iwański.
