Alyaksandr Lukashenka stated that “Belarus is ready to send the refugees back to their homeland, but they do not want to return home.” The words of the president of Belarus are quoted by the state agency BiełTA.

Lukashenka spoke during Monday’s meeting with members of the group developing the draft of the new constitution. He assured that Belarus “does everything to prevent refugees from gathering at the state border.” He also said, as reported by BiełTA news agency, that “Belarus is ready to send refugees who changed their minds about entering the European Union back to their homeland”.

“We’re ready, as we used to do, of getting everyone on the planes, including the Belavia airline, to take them home. But these people, I must say, are very stubborn: no one wants to come back. And it is understandable: they have nowhere to go back to. They do not have an apartment there, they understand that they will not have enough to feed their children. Moreover, some people just fear for their lives, going back – said the head of state.

– I want you to understand: there is very active work in this direction to convince people to go home. But nobody wants to come back – added Lukashenka.

Action Minsk

From spring the number of attempts to illegally cross the Belarusian border has risen sharply with Lithuania, Latvia and Poland by migrants from the Middle East, Africa and other regions. The European Union and the Member States believe that this is the result of the deliberate actions of Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime, which instrumentally uses migrants in response to previously imposed EU sanctions.

Tensions increased in the second week of November, when a large group of migrants attempted to cross the border by force.
