A total solar eclipse is one of the most spectacular cosmic events that we can watch from Earth. It will reach on April 8 and will be visible in the United States, from the southwest to the northeast. This means that in Dallas, Indianapolis or Buffalo the Moon will completely cover the Sun. The event arouses such enthusiasm in America that authorities expect several million more tourists. Americans are lucky. On average, a total eclipse is visible from the same spot on Earth every 360 years, but in America it's only been seven years since the last one.

– I've seen 20 of them around the world. On all seven continents, says Leticia Ferrer, a 63-year-old eclipse hunter. Leticia traveled all over the world for this experience. – I'm addicted to it. From the feeling of being one with the universe for those few seconds. Being really present, she admits. This time she doesn't have to go anywhere because the total solar eclipse will be visible from her own lawn. Leticia lives in Texas. It is here that on Monday at 1:36 p.m. the Sun will, in a sense, disappear.

Where will the phenomenon be visible?

– An eclipse occurs when the Moon appears between us here on Earth and the Sun. So the Moon will pass between us, explains Dr. Nicholeen Viall, a scientist from NASA.

The moon will cover the sun's rays first near the Kiribati islands. A few minutes after 12 p.m. the phenomenon will be visible in Mexico, then in Texas and other American states. The so-called totality belt will also include Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Maine and part of Canada. Crowds are expected everywhere.

– This weekend we will be open on an additional day, i.e. on Sunday – announces Jeff Ford, owner of a restaurant in Indiana.

A total solar eclipse is not that rare, as it occurs on average every 18 months. However, it rarely happens that people live on its path – so many people.

– Of course, most of the Earth is water. These are not usually places where people live. In this case, many people will be able to watch this phenomenon, says Viall.

Preparations are underway in cities along the eclipse belt

The city of Niagara Falls in Canada, where the famous waterfall is located, is expecting up to a million visitors. Therefore, a state of emergency was introduced there. – It will be a record crowd. Even though we receive about 14 million people every year, it lasts all year long, it doesn't happen all at once, comments Jim Diodati, mayor of Niagara Falls.

Local restaurants and stores are stocking up. – We do everything we can to make sure people don't lack anything. We have snacks, drinks, bottled water – says Asif Ali, owner of a grocery store in Niagara Falls.

Authorities of large cities located in the eclipse belt have implemented additional security measures. Additional buses will be provided. – Please do not stop on highways during the eclipse. We must make sure that services will be able to move freely from place to place, appeals Travis Houston, director of the Office of Emergency Management in Dallas.

During the day, all planets visible to the naked eye will be visible

The phase of a total solar eclipse will last as long as 4.5 minutes at its peak. For comparison, in 2017 the same phenomenon visible from the United States lasted just over two hours.

– It's an experience that you really want to experience with your family and loved ones. The feeling of experiencing something like this together is wonderful. My children will remember this for the rest of their lives, says Professor Ason Harlow, a physicist at the University of Toronto.

Chris and Stephane will definitely remember this day for the rest of their lives, as they decided to get married then. “I thought it would be a great day to get married,” says Stephane. In this case, all planets visible to the naked eye will also be visible in the sky during the day, including Venus.

– It will be a bit scary because it will get very dark during the day. I've never seen an eclipse. My parents are also afraid because they have never seen it either, admits Hector Teran, a 9-year-old from Texas. – My mother will bake cookies, my sister will be with us. “I think even grandma will come over so we can all watch it together,” says Angelia Goetzman, a 10-year-old from Texas.

The previous so-called Great American Solar Eclipse was watched by millions of people. To look at the Sun safely, even during an eclipse, special glasses are necessary, which many people do not know about. In poorer neighborhoods they are given away for free.
