Archaeologists discovered the remains of a woman who died five thousand years ago. According to experts, she probably belonged to the upper classes in Caraal culture, which developed there in parallel with ancient Egypt or China.
Cartal, located near the Pacific coast, just over 180 kilometers north of Lima, is considered the oldest city of the Americas and the cradle of Andean cultures. Archaeologists believe that, unlike Egypt or China, Caraal culture developed in complete isolation. According to scientists, a new discovery testifies to the rank of women in this ancient community, inhabiting the current Peru long before Inami. “This is an important burial because it has elements corresponding to a woman with a high status,” archaeologist David Palomino told Reuters. He drew attention to the way the corpse was wrapped, and how the skin, hair and nails were embalmed.
Caral civilization
The body of a woman who at the time of death could be between 20 and 35 years old, was covered by brown and blue feathers, perhaps from Amazon birds, such as Ary parrots. As Palomino donated, baskets with gifts, vases, gourds and a toucan beak were found next to the grave. Scientists did not determine the date of burial, but Caral's civilization is dated for years from 3000 to 1800 BC and is considered one of the oldest in the world. The archaeological position of Caraal has been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 2009.
