CNN journalists, citing Pentagon sources, reported that the Americans removed sensitive data from the MQ-9 Reaper drone before crashing it in the Black Sea. The destruction is a consequence of – as assessed – “dangerous” and “unprofessional” actions of the Russians.

The Russian Su-27 fighter hit the propeller of the MQ-9 Reaper dronewhich led to its shipwreck in the Black Sea. US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby called the Russian action “dangerous, unprofessional and reckless.” The wreck has not yet been recovered. Moscow denies that it is responsible, and the secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev announces that Moscow will try to recover the remains of the drone from the sea.

CNN: operators managed to erase sensitive data

The day after the event, CNN journalists – citing two representatives Pentagon – reported that the operators of the crashed US MQ-9 drone “previously managed to wipe sensitive data from it, including the software used to collect intelligence data.”

“The step that has been taken is to remotely wipe the software on the drone, the sensitive software that collects signals and intelligence that is sent on,” TV correspondent Oren Lieberman said. This was to ensure that the most vulnerable part of the MQ-9 did not end up in the hands of the Russians or anyone else.

Price: deep incompetence of the Russian pilot

US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby explained that it would be very difficult or even impossible for the US to recover the drone, among others due to the depth of the waters at the site of its crash and the lack of warships in the Black Sea.

State Department spokesman Ned Price in an interview with MSNBC commented that the collision between the Russian Su-27 and the MQ-9 was “probably unintentional” and was the result of “deep incompetence” of the Russian pilot. However, he stressed that ultimately what matters is the effect of this event.

“The video shows a Russian pilot seemingly uncontrollably crashing into a U.S. unmanned aerial vehicle, forcing the U.S. military to crash it over the Black Sea,” Price said.

“Such events have the potential to make that happen United States come into direct contact with Russia. Nobody wants it. We certainly don’t want that. Our message to the Russians is that this cannot continue.
