A recently discovered asteroid entered Earth's atmosphere today over the Philippines. The space rock, known as CAQTDL2, also known as 2024 RW1, left a distinct, bright trail behind it that lit up the sky.
On Wednesday, the International Meteorological Organization (IMO) said asteroid CAQTDL2, also known as 2024 RW1, was on a collision course with Earth. The recently discovered celestial body was relatively small, estimated to be only about a meter in diameter, and was not expected to pose a threat to our safety.
Slow, light car
The object entered Earth's atmosphere at about 6:46 p.m. Central European Summer Time, where it burned up. It was visible in the area of the Philippine island of Luzon. A bright, relatively slow-moving fireball appeared in the sky. Photos and videos of the phenomenon appeared on social media.
Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO) NASA said the collision was detected by multiple sensors.
