When I talk to President Volodymyr Zelensky, he speaks Ukrainian and I speak Polish and we understand each other, said President Andrzej Duda in Davos. He added a humorous insertion to this, which refers to a phrase hailed as a symbol of the steadfast resistance of Ukrainian troops in the world.
“Very often, when I talk to President Volodymyr Zelensky, he speaks Ukrainian and I speak Polish, and we understand each other,” the president said in Polish. “Especially at a time when we have to decide where the ‘russkiy voivodship korabl’ (Russian warship – ed.)” should go, he added in English, drawing laughter from the audience.
It was a reference to the events of the first day of Russian armed aggression against Ukraine, when the Russian Black Sea Fleet attacked the small Ukrainian Black Sea Snake Island, which was defended by only a dozen border guards.
An exchange of views between the attacking ship and the Ukrainian soldiers was recorded. “This is a Russian warship, surrender and lay down your weapons. Otherwise, we will launch an attack” – you could hear on the recording. “Russian military ship: f… go!” the defenders replied. Graphics illustrating these events were included, among others, on Ukrainian postage stamps. The phrase also became the Ukrainian word of the year according to the online dictionary Myslovo.
