President Andrzej Duda in an interview for the Polska Times said that there was a proposal to introduce a state of emergency for three months. The president – as he reports – said then that it should be introduced for a shorter period of time. “I strongly emphasized to the prime minister that I would like the proposals to be structured in such a way that the people who live in this area would not feel what was happening” – he stressed.

From September 2, in the border zone with Belarus, i.e. in part of the Podlaskie and Lubelskie voivodeships, there is a state of emergency. It covers 183 towns. It was introduced for 30 days under the ordinance of President Andrzej Duda, issued at the request of the Council of Ministers.

– I strongly drew the prime minister’s attention to the fact that I would like the proposals to be structured in such a way that the people who live in this area would not feel what was happening and that it really only applied to the fact that it would not be possible to conduct activities in the area covered by the state of emergency diversionary activities. Let us keep our feet firmly on the ground, so that there is no possibility of organizing some political boom, some happenings, disturbing the Border Guard officers and soldiers in the performance of their duties, said the president.

As he stressed, “it is not only a matter of our ‘whim,’ but it is also a matter of our responsibility for guarding the European Union border, so it is also our responsibility to our European partners”.

– If it was difficult to prevent this, because many people, unfortunately, behaved unreasonably, and the threat of subversive acts was increasing, due to the approaching culmination phase of the Zapad-2021 maneuvers, there was no way out, only the most reinforced precautionary measures had to be introduced , and such a constitutional measure is a state of emergency in the form of a state of emergency. And for the shortest possible time, because I also stressed this to the prime minister, so that we would not introduce this state for a long time, stressed the president.

When asked if the government wanted to introduce a state of emergency for a longer period than 30 days, Andrzej Duda said yes. – The initial proposal was to introduce a state of emergency for three months. Then I said that we should introduce it for a shorter period of time – emphasized the president. When asked whether he expected an extension of the state of emergency, he replied that “he expects an in-depth analysis when the monthly deadline for which it was introduced expires”.

Duda: some politicians want to jog across the border

Andrzej Duda was also asked about the position of part of the opposition that voted in the Sejm in favor of lifting the state of emergency, opposition politicians going to the borders, and about the statement that the introduction of the state of emergency is intended only to limit the media coverage of events from the border with Belarus.

– It’s just that some politicians want to run around the border under the watchful eye of cameras. As you can see, there are those in the Sejm who are ready to sacrifice all values just to exist, and we are dealing with it once again – said Andrzej Duda.

He stressed that if there was a decision to strengthen sanctions against the Lukashenka regime, our support would be here. – I would like to emphasize that I am talking about the regime, and not about the people of Belarus, who are dear to us and whose right to live in an independent and democratic country I unequivocally supported – said Andrzej Duda.
